Throwing (Good) Shade

Throwing (Good) Shade

As someone who doesn’t need to wear prescription glasses, I am not as well-trained in the world of eyewear. I recently discovered polarized lenses and man - do they make a difference. Once I discovered those, I started dipping my toe into the world of sunglasses, and now I know exactly what to look for when going shopping. Let’s go through my process together, shall we?

Follow Personal Criteria

In order to know what will look good on you, you need to know what type of face shape you have. Check out this article to find yours- https://www.realsimple.com/beauty-fashion/what-is-my-face-shape

Other than knowing your face shape and what will suite you best, it is good to know what features you like about certain glasses. For example, I find nose pads to be bothersome, so I stick to sunnies with that built-in. I also use my sunglasses to push back my hair, I need a pair with strong legs that won’t get bent out of shape. Thinking about how you will live in the sunglasses will help you determine your preferences.

Know the name of the shapes you like

Aviator, round, square, cat-eye - there are many styles out there to choose from, and it can get overwhelming. Once you know your face shape, you will know which styles look best on you.

Just remember there are always rule breakers; if you see a pair you love, but they are outside your list, try them on anyway! Which leads me to my next point…

Try on a new shape outside your comfort zone

If you are not one to stray from your norm, this is where your shopping buddy comes in handy. Ask them to pick a pair for you to try out. You never know, you might find a new pair you love that you would have never picked for yourself, and if not - you can get in a good laugh at how silly you look.

Sidenote: If you try on a pair you don’t like, take note of what you don’t like about them to help narrow down your search.

Stick to the ones you like best

Narrow down your search to at least 2 contenders. Think about your wardrobe. Think about “cost per wear”. And then make your decision.

Glasses are fun, and they have the power to elevate your whole outfit - so go for it!
