Hey hey,
So, there I was, just minding my own business, scrolling through Vinted (the European version of Poshmark), when BAM, I bought something not on my wishlist. Scandalous, I know. It was a “just because” purchase. A "maybe-I’m-entering-my-bohemian-babe-era" moment. Immediately followed by a little voice in my head whispering, “Was that very mindful of you?”
Cue the guilt. And the spiraling. Because here’s the thing: I’ve been trying to build a wardrobe that’s fewer pieces, better quality. You know, the kind of closet that screams, “I’ve got my life together,” even if I overslept on my alarm. But if I want to stick to this whole mindful shopping thing, does that mean I can’t experiment anymore?
The Issue, or More Like My Issue
Spoiler! Kind of... but also, not really. Life’s unpredictable. And bodies change, tastes shift, trends evolve. One day you’re into linen neutrals, the next you're craving something with sequins and a little drama. That’s not a failure. That’s just being human.
The whole “buy it for life” motto? Great in theory, but let’s take it as more of a gentle nudge than a rule etched in stone. Sure, aim for longevity, but maybe not forever-ever. Instead of thinking of your wardrobe as a museum of timeless pieces, think of it as a garden. Some pieces are trusty perennials that come back year after year. Others are wildflowers, a little unpredictable but beautiful in their moment. And some things just don’t take root, and that’s totally okay.
Why Experimentation Isn’t the Enemy
Experimenting with your style isn’t frivolous, it’s actually part of the process. Every “oops” purchase teaches you something.
The trick is to experiment mindfully. Instead of letting the thrill of the purchase cloud your judgment, zoom out. Ask yourself:
-
Where does this fall on the spectrum from “obvious winner” to “risky wildcard”?
-
Have my last few purchases been pretty safe? Maybe this is the moment to spice it up.
-
If this doesn’t work out, can I resell it, gift it?
Enter the 80/20 Rule
Think of your closet like a smoothie. You want 80% to be the dependable stuff—your bananas, your oats, your Greek yogurt. Then sprinkle in 20% of that spirulina or cacao nib. That balance? Perfection.
Overall Thoughts
You don’t have to nail it every time. There’s room for growth, missteps, and the occasional “what was I thinking?”
-
Be kind to your past self. She tried her best.
-
You’re allowed to evolve. You’re supposed to, actually.
So shop with care, but don’t cage your curiosity. Your style journey is yours. May it be full of surprises, slam dunks, and maybe one or two pieces that make no sense... until they totally do.
And that's what I've got for you this time. I would love to know your thoughts, drop them in the comments section below.
TTFN,
Dre
