Hi everyone,
Let’s talk about something that doesn’t get enough attention in the world of slow fashion and sustainable style: how to actually get dressed every day.
Sure, we’ve all read about building a capsule wardrobe, investing in timeless basics, and doing the occasional closet cleanout (ICYMI, check out our closet decluttering guide). But when you're standing in front of your closet in the morning tired, maybe rushed, do those tips really make it easier?
Ask yourself:
-
Did decluttering actually simplify your morning routine?
-
Is your capsule wardrobe flexible enough for real life?
-
Does your closet support your lifestyle, or is it still overwhelming?
If you’re still feeling stuck, you’re not alone. That’s why it’s time to go back to basics. Welcome to Getting Dressed 101, a simple 4-step method to help you get dressed with purpose, ease, and style.
Let’s dive in.
Step 1: Define Your Day’s Parameters
Before reaching for anything, pause. What kind of day are you dressing for?
-
What’s the weather forecast?
-
What’s on your schedule—meetings, errands, dinner plans?
-
Will your outfit need to transition from day to night?
I like to start from the ground up, literally. Choosing your shoes first helps set the tone for the rest of the outfit. Are you walking a lot? Going somewhere casual? Once you’ve chosen your shoes, build from there.
Step 2: Decide How You Want to Feel
Your outfit is more than just clothes—it sets your mood.
Some days, I want to feel powerful and polished. Other days, I want to feel cozy or carefree. Before diving into your closet, ask yourself:
“How do I want to feel today?”
If you're stuck, pick two adjectives like "confident and comfortable" or "creative and calm." These words can act as style guides, making your outfit choices feel more intentional.
Step 3: Choose a Hero Piece
Now that you’ve set your parameters and defined your vibe, it’s time to choose your hero piece. The item that will anchor your outfit.
This could be a statement piece you’ve been dying to wear or a trusted staple that always makes you feel like yourself. For example, maybe you want to start with your favorite denim button-up. That’s your hero.
From there, build around it. Pair it with black leggings and metallic boots for a fun contrast. Suddenly, the boots become the “wow” piece, but it all started with that classic top. Your hero item helps you create a look that feels cohesive and confident.
Step 4: Fill in the Gaps
With your hero piece in place, now’s the time to complete the look. Add complementary items to balance proportions, textures, or colors.
A few pro tips:
-
If your top is oversized, go for a sleeker bottom and vice versa.
-
Don’t be afraid to mix vibes: casual with elevated, feminine with edgy.
-
Limit yourself to 1–2 outfit swaps max. Trust your gut.
The key here is balance and authenticity. Play until it feels right.
At the end of the day, style should feel personal. Trends come and go, but when you’re dressing with intention and authenticity, you’ll always look your best because you’ll feel your best. That’s what I’ve got for you this time. Try out the steps this week, and let me know how it goes.
Until next time,
Dre
