I am originally a summer girl who grew up in sunny Southern California where the weather rarely gets below 60 degrees. My main wardrobe consisted of tropical prints, bright colors, flowy skirts, and a lot of sandals. There is nothing wrong with this when you live in LA, but we’re talking about Portland here. I learned that as the weather changes, so does your wardrobe. It was not an easy transition for your SoCal girl, but we got there. I had to say goodbye to my typical garb and welcome a new way of dressing.
After living in Portland for almost 7 years, I learned how to dress appropriately, especially for the rain. I learned how to keep it stylish, keep it fun, and still find creative ways to let my summer side out even when it’s dripping wet outside.
To assure that no one else has to struggle as much as I did, I am going to share my fail-proof rainy day(s) outfits to keep you warm, fresh to death, and ready for any occasion.
Layering
This might sound like a big duh! for those Portland veterans, but for those of us who come from warmer parts, this is not a well-known trick.
Layering is key and especially in Portland where the weather changes throughout the day.
It’s a good idea to stock up on some basic staples that are easy to mix and match.

Waterproof Shoes
I swear, if your feet are warm, the rest of you is, too. Find yourself a nice pair of water resistant boots that can be dressed up or down because you will be wearing them a lot.

Cropped Lengths
This tip is important because you want to avoid getting the bottom of your pants wet. Jeans take a long time to dry…speaking from experience here.
Wanna wear a dress or skirt? Try a midi length. Plus, at this length you get to show off your shoes.

Athleisure
When the weather is dreary, you want to make sure you are comfy.
Sweatpants might be great to throw on in the house, but step it up with some cute athleisure wear when running errands.

A Proper Raincoat
I quickly learned that people in Portland don’t use umbrellas, it’s all about the hood. It’s easier and hands-free!
