Although it's a common gibe for us Oregonians to harsh on Californians, the time has come to cast that trope aside. As fellow west-coasters, we can't help but feel sorrow for our neighbors to the south, who are experiencing a tragedy of epic proportions. It's likely that most of us know someone, or are friends with someone who knows someone in LA. I'm personally acquainted with three families whose homes have burned down.
Seeing the images of the California fires is horrifying, and undoubtedly triggering for Oregonians who were affected by our own devastating fires in Talent and other Oregon towns.
For those who are able to help, here are some links to reputable organizations on the ground in California assisting those whose lives have been upended. Thank you.
World Central Kitchen, providing meals to California communities in need.
American Red Cross, or text REDCROSS to 90999 to make a donation. Providing shelter and support to affected areas.
The Los Angeles Regional Food Bank: Meeting the nutritional needs of area residents.
Pasadena Humane: Providing shelter and care for animals left behind, or dropped off by evacuees.
Cal Fund: Supporting wildfire recovery efforts to aid those most in need.
The LA firefighters Fund: The foundation is supporting the firemen who lost their home and paying overtime
This is just a scratch-the-surface list, the need is so great. Thank you for your generosity if you're able to help out.
p.s. Remember there are scammers out there trying to take advantage of this tragedy. If you're unsure about the legitimacy of a charity, you can check them out here.
Thank you for your compassion!
