If you have been following along, you know that I digitized my entire closet last year, and with that came the analytics of my wardrobe. Right in front of me was the hard evidence of what I wear all the time, what I think I often wear but don’t, and what items I ended up not wearing at all. The common denominator I found was that my most worn items weren’t the showstopper pieces, but the simplest, most basic items. These are the items that make magic happen and pull everything together. They are so simple, so versatile, which makes them easy to go unappreciated, but today, we are going to sing their praises. So, let’s get into it!
1. Everyday Jewelry
While statement pieces are great, and have their moments, it's the understated jewelry that truly forms the backbone of a jewelry collection. My mini hoops and dainty chain necklaces were my most worn pieces, and I can quickly understand why. Their simplicity allows them to complement any outfit, adding a touch of elegance without overwhelming the look. They are also extremely comfortable, so much so that I could sleep with them on and not realize until the next morning.
What I learned:
I love jewelry, my collection is large, and for the most part everything gets use. But, I would like to redirect my future purchases to reflect what is the reality. Instead of buying the next wow piece, it may be time to upgrade my most-worn.
2. The Button-Up Blouse
The classic white button-up is often hailed as a wardrobe must-have, but it's not a one-size-fits-all solution. Personally, I've experimented with various 100% cotton, structured blouses and found them quickly in the “no” pile, I truly thought that they just weren’t for me. But then. I bought this gauzy, blue button-up and it completely rocked my world. Strong language, but it did. I finally understood the dynamic power of the button-up blouse; I paired it with jeans, skirts, and even tied over spaghetti strap dresses. It comes to no surprise that it was right up there in my most worn items.
What I learned:
Fit and material are paramount to a well fitting button-up blouse! When the combination is right, it can be dressed up or down, rolled, tucked, and buttoned in so many ways, it truly is the ultimate dynamic top.
3. Well-Fitting Jeans
Notoriously, jeans are one of the most difficult items to shop for. Unless they have a ton of stretch, they aren’t form fitting, meaning you gotta find your cut. But from what I have found, a good pair of mid-rise, straight-leg jeans remains a constant favorite in my closet. This style flatters nearly every body type, and has the best longevity.
What I learned:
Invest in high-quality denim, preferably no more than 2% elastane (they last longer this way). Jeans are one of my favorite items to shop for at HWGA because you can find some really nice brands at a steal. I will also mention peeping at vintage jeans, cause you know what they say, “they don’t make 'em like they used to.”
4. The Tee
The classic crew neck white tee is often labeled as an essential, but it's not universally flattering. For those with a larger bust, like myself, altering the neckline makes a world of a difference. I've found that a soft knit v-neck tee suits me best, providing comfort and a flattering fit.
What I learned:
Don't be afraid to explore different cuts and colors to find the tee that becomes your go-to staple because you will be wearing it a lot.
5. Wrap Garments
All hail the wrap! Wrap styles—be it skirts, tops, or dresses—have proven their staying power in my closet due to their adaptability. Their adjustable nature ensures a fit that accommodates body changes. From wrap knit dresses in autumn to wrap coats in winter and wrap skirts in spring, there's a wrap garment suitable for every season.
What I learned:
When in doubt, go for a wrap.
6. White Sneakers
This might come as no surprise, but a pair of white sneakers is indispensable. Through trial and error with various colors, I've discovered that white sneakers provide unparalleled versatility. They seamlessly blend into any outfit, allowing other elements to shine.
What I learned:
While white sneakers might not be the most exciting item to buy, they have a huge payoff. Sometimes, when I want to look more put together, I reach for the elevated cousin of the white sneaker, the white flat (I personally love a derby shoe, but this can be ballet flats or whatever floats your boat. I guess the takeaway is get yourself a white shoe.
And there we have it, my top 6 most worn items. We have dissected each one and honestly, this exercise has changed the way I choose to shop in the future. I hope it has for you too.
Until next time,
