I read a lot of fashion articles, follow a many fashion blogs, scroll my way through Pinterest, and watch countless hours of YouTube videos on sustainable fashion and these are the 3 best tips I have heard and implemented into my own closet. So let's get into it.
1) Keep a wishlist or a "waiting room"
I mean, wow, what a game changer. I like this one because instead of saying "don't shop", this allows for some wiggle room. Cause let's get real, who doesn't want a new treat here and there.
By having a wishlist, you can narrow down what you actually want, limiting those almost always regretful impulse purchases.
The way I have used this method is to put any item I am considering into either a list on my notes app or an image of the item into a "waiting room" on my Indyx app (a digital wardrobe app, I'll get into that later!) What I have found is that after giving myself a waiting period (crucial for this to actually work) I have either forgotten about the item or find it was more the rush of the hunt than the item itself.
Giving myself time to contemplate a purchase before pulling the trigger allows me to visualize how it will fit into my wardrobe, or not. And if I end up buying the item, I don't have guilt attached to the purchase because I gave it time.
2) Make a digitized closet
I know, I know, this one takes some work. But it is 1000% worth it. It makes a world of a difference when you can see everything you own right in front of you.
There are various closet apps, but I like Indyx the most. It is easy to use and free.
I have used this to create outfits, keep record of my cost per wears, create packing lists, and as mentioned above, a waiting room to see how each item will actually fit into my closet before buying. I can see what items I wear the most and which items aren't serving my needs anymore. This is a good way to declutter without having all your belongings on top of your bed.
To get the most from any wardrobe app, you gotta log your outfits daily. I was surprised when my end of the year recap came along because my top items were things I wouldn't have even expected. From this information, I now can make better purchases in 2026 and that is the whole point, right?
3) Change up your closet organization
I used to organize my closet as such: tops in one area, pants in another, jackets over here, pajamas over there, you get the gist. Then one day after falling down a YouTube hole, I can't remember who, said to categorize your closet not by categories but by formalities (I have a blog all about this here).
And it changed the way I get dressed completely.
Now, when I open my drawer to hang around the house, all my options are in one place. Not only does this make getting ready a breeze, but I can easily see the gaps in my wardrobe. For example, I have a lot of casual hangout clothing, which is fine, but not much of anything for formal occasions. Now it makes sense why I get so flustered when looking for something to wear when those moments arise, and that I should consider adding to that category to help my future self out.
There are so many wonderful sustainable fashion stylists out there with wonderful tips. Have you come across any that changed the way you get dressed in the mornings? I would love to hear.
And that is what I have for you this time. Happy New Years! I wish you health, happiness and all good things for 2026 🎉
Cheers,
Dre
