Hi, hi everyone!
So, I don’t know about you, but social media is starting to feel like one giant ad, and I’m bored with it. I miss the authenticity, the unedited pictures, the beauty of a perfectly imperfect shot. We have become completely obsessed with perfection.
In the fashion world, there seems to be this idea that in order for an outfit to look good, it also needs to look new. I disagree. In order to fight this obsession with newness, I made the effort to seek out outfits on Pinterest that look worn and still slay. So stick with me through this exercise, and please feel free to share your own thoughts in the comment section below.

Jacket by mul_olga
This first one here caught my eye because nothing about this outfit is perfectly polished. The trousers have wrinkles and folds from normal wear, and the tassels on the jacket aren’t falling perfectly straight. The outfit has movement.
Also, either one of these items look like they could have been purchased yesterday or a few years ago. There is no real time stamp of the style or trend, which lends this outfit to last for years to come.

Next up is this simple number. Other than the shoes being very on trend, nothing else about this outfit screams new to me. Each piece is so simple and basic that I could probably come up with a similar outfit from my own closet right now. The fact that this look is so attainable is what makes it attractive.

Now this one is just fun. The way she has mixed and matched all of these elements, is completely unique. There is this thrifted sort of feel to the look that is hard to recreate with new clothes. The pants alone look like they have already had some type of patchwork done to them, and with more wear and tear they will keep getting better.
Mafalda Vasconcelos
I love a good artist studio image, and this one feels pretty authentic to me. Her pants, full of paint, really do look like her painting pants. Of course this image is curated, hence the very white blouse, but I could also see this person throw on a coat over this outfit and go grab a coffee, and it would still look very genuine. There is something so refreshing when you can see how clothes are actually lived in.
Natalie Borton
This outfit is totally realistic and versatile. You could probably find someone outside right now wearing a similar combination. I really like this fashion blogger because she focuses on thoughtful style consumption and really using what you have.
And lastly, I want to talk about designer handbags. I know with their high price tag, we want to take care of them and make sure they look good for a really long time. But, that can also mean that they rarely get used. Take this person for example, they are not scared to wear this bag and adjust it to their needs and in the end, isn’t that really the point?
A few main takeaways from this exercise:
-
Fight that idea of how things “should look” and embrace the humanness of style.
-
Think about how a garment would wear though time and washes.
-
Take away the preciousness of items and wear them!
That’s what I got for you this time.
Peace,
Dre
