Star Employees and Designer Resale

As you might imagine, over the course of almost 30 years, Here We Go Again deluxe resale boutique has had a LOT of employees. Any small local business rises or falls based on their front-line employees. Designer resale shops are no different. If I’m honest, while all my employees have been lovely and fun, some of them stand out in my memories.

The thing that makes an employee memorable to me, is not just longevity, although that is a factor. For the employees that stay with me for years, of course they are seared into my consciousness. I just have more memories to recall and got to know them better than others who stayed only briefly.

A team of unicorns

Which brings me to our current magical team of unicorns. Where to begin? With Amanda-Jean, of course! “AmJ” is my longest serving staffer and my right hand. She started at HWGA in September 2013! I consider it to be kismet of the highest order that she moved to Portland and found an apartment literally on the same block as our NE Broadway designer resale boutique. Portland resale shoppers know that the Broadway store was a COVID casualty and we closed in down earlier this year.

Amanda-Jean worked so hard during the entire 2020 year, doing everything she could to keep our Portland resale shop going. She even challenged her fear of live cameras to start doing regular live videos on Facebook. She now has her very own Sunday Portland resale shopping fan club (and a few scattered quite a distance away, too!)

AmJ’s biggest talent is her ability to style anyone and make them feel instantly comfortable. She knows style and knows how to apply it to different body types and ages. When it comes to customer service, she is the bomb. She has an infectious laugh, an ability to find common interests with anyone, and a manner of putting people at ease with her body-positivity message.

Photo magic

David Yurman sterling silver bracelet closeupOver the past year, I’ve gradually handed off the product photography to AmJ as well. She has a skill capturing the right angle, the right close-up, to really show off our designer consignment items in the best possible light. No sleight of hand is needed though, the authentic designer label consignment items we get in are in excellent condition and ready for their close-ups. But AmJ somehow manages to capture them beautifully. Her editing skills have become legend.

Featured in an international blog

Just this week, we received word that our very own AmJ would be featured in a blog post from international speaker and blogger, Denise Wymore. It’s a great piece of writing and very thoughtful.  Although it’s written about a different industry than designer consignment, the topic is still pertinent to us. Amanda personifies what this post is about- what is our true mission? Yes, we sell women’s consignment clothing and accessories, along with fabulous and always authentic luxury goods, we’re in the business of connecting and building community.

Our calendar project

With Amanda-Jean’s awesome photo skills, this year we’ve dubbed her the “doggo photoggo” as she takes charge of the portraits of our neighborhood dogs. Why dogs? To celebrate the start of our 30th year this summer, Here We Go Again is about to publish a 16-month calendar featuring our local canine corps. During COVID we’ve developed quite a dog fan base, too! Our front stoop is a regular stop for dogs walking in the neighborhood. The calendars will feature AmJ’s portraits and we expect them to be available by the end of July, just in time to launch our 30th year.

Building Community

And, because part of our mission has always been to support local not-for-profits and build up our community, the calendar project “Here We Dog-go Again will be a fundraiser for the Oregon Humane Society. Details to come soon!

But wait, there’s more!

While AmJ is our longest-serving employee, she’s not alone in her impressive tenure! Andrea starting working at HWGA in 2014. During her time at HWGA, she has worked part-time, transitioned to Boutique Manager, then back again while she attended PSU. During the past several years, Andrea (“Dre”) has become invaluable as the manager of our really fun Instagram feed. Not following us? You should be! Not only does Dre post great photos of amazing designer clothing, shoes and luxury handbags, she also posts contests, and special events. She’s clever, funny and has a great eye for design and style.

An embarrassment of riches

Not only is that phrase an apt description of the shop, with designer resale items being added to our racks every day, authentic luxury goods frequently, and just terrific everyday women’s resale clothing, it perfectly sums up our staff. I’m thrilled to share that we’ve been able to bring Sierra back into the shop this month after a year-long absence.  With all that’s going on right now and huge quantities of incredible resale clothing coming in, we need her help! Sierra is quite the “energizer bunny” in the shop. She’s always working on displays, tagging and merchandising the newly arrived designer resale goods, helping us get ready for the next live sale on Facebook, dusting, cleaning – she is almost a blur!

Get to know our wonderful staff, you won’t regret it! And I guarantee that once they get to know you and your style, they’ll be able to pull a dressing room full of curated designer resale clothing that’s right up your alley!

Chris moved to Portland, Oregon in 1990 and immediately felt at home, among her people. She started Here We Go Again Deluxe Resale Boutique in 1992 and has never looked back. The second location of her store opened in 1997. Chris loves pretty much everything about clothes and fashion, but she has a serious boot and shoe addiction that is fed by the two stores. It's doubtful she will ever be recovered. In addition to clothes, Chris loves mentoring young women and teaching them about what it takes to run and manage a small business. She has employed some pretty remarkable women over the years and is grateful for all they've done to help grow Here We Go Again. She is a Hoosier by birth, but was raised in Nebraska. She has two sisters who continue to run the consignment store there, and one brother who has sense enough to stay out of the way. Her husband of twenty-seven years, is a land use planner and the fix-anything-guru that Chris relies upon more often than she'd like.
